Whitewashing Our Crusty Salvaged Mantel

Whitewashing Our Crusty Salvaged Mantel

You may remember, just before Christmas last year, Steve and I rescued a 1920s-ish window head. I found it in rough shape at the Chartreuse barn sale in Thomasville, North Carolina. Though I wasn’t looking for a piece like this, I knew when I discovered it, it had to go home with me. It is 6 1/2 feet long and very heavy. Recently I decided that whitewashing our crusty salvaged mantel was what I craved.

SO, WHAT EXACTLY IS OUR HOME’S STYLE?

I call our 1977 brick ranch “rustic elegant.” Leading into the front door is a lovely courtyard full of plants and an Italian pottery water fountain that are our home’s defining features. Inside, find painted and unfinished wood furniture, ethnic textiles, one-of-a-kind accessories, local pottery, crusty columns, old doors, and whatever I discover as life goes on. I am excited to show you how you can shop my favorite rustic home decor sources.

Getting to see the show in all of its Christmas glory before the crowds arrive was simply magical. Owners and master stylists Gail Cekuta and Kathee Zurian have literally outdone themselves.

Shopping The Chartreuse Barn Sale

Shopping The Chartreuse Barn Sale

Last week on the blog I shared my love of old doors and how I decorate with them around our home. The same day that I posted that story I decided to ride over to the Chartreuse barn sale in nearby Thomasville, NC. A glorious crisp fall day with blue skies overhead, it was the epitome of barn shopping days.

Immediately my eye spied wonderful rustic doors, full of crusty character everywhere. My mind was spinning with possibilities! There was a set (see it above standing up), a matched pair already hinged. Awesome for a sliding door in someone’s farmhouse-style home.
